Posted by: Staff Writer on March 18, 2013 | 2 Comments
Ask any Deaf person what they’re saving up for, and travel more often than not makes the top of their list. Hearing aids (never mind that one of these bad boys can be worth an entire 10-day Ireland getaway), car payments, and the mortgage may be essentials, but hitting the road - or friendly skies - for a trip is what makes for a life well-lived. It’s an unwritten rule that Deafies are hooked on travel – and it’s not simply because we get “pre-board” privileges at the airport! We love to stamp our passports and we cannot lie. Hearing loss is relative to the loss of one’s functional voice box. Now that’s just silly! Babies learn to communicate by mimicking their parents, i.e. speaking. When learning to speak, the process is what we call baby talk and includes listening with our ears, watching the mouth of mom (or dad), and trying to mimic the noises we hear.

Ask anyone what the necessary ingredient is for a top-notch romantic relationship, and “communication” is always high on the list. But there’s a catch is: the same answer can vary by language: Es la la comunicación! (Spanish), lian luo (Mandarin), Kommunikation (German). Ask a deaf person, and you may get a signed response of two C-shaped hands moving back and forth.

Fellow Deafies, why do we love to date (or marry) thee? Let us count the ways: It’s the mutual “I’m lost” expression we exchange when the mustached waiter rambles too fast. It’s the passing-notes-in-class giddiness of using sign language in our private corner of the hearing world. It’s not dealing with awkward silences, because silence is our domain anyway. It’s not having to fall asleep with a squeak-squeak-squealing hearing aid when we can’t bear to skip lovers’ pillow talk.

As ads for Princess Cut diamond rings, steak dinners, and Godiva truffles bombard our consciousness, we are reminded of our love lives - or lack thereof. Chances are you have fallen head over heels when a pheromone-tipped Cupid arrow struck. Chances are also that you’ve fought with a sweetie about the usual suspects (money, in-laws, sex, children, and even the toilet seat left up).

Confession: Here in deafREVIEW’s flagship city of Seattle, we’re still mourning the Seahawks’ by-the-skin-of-our-teeth 28-30 tearjerker loss to the Atlanta Falcons en route to Super Bowl’s Mercedes Benz Superdome in NOLA. Wads of Kleenex later, we’re ready to move on. That’s because it’s only T minus 7 days to SuperBowl XLVII, and there ain’t a moment left to waste on anything but trash talk, betting pools, Manti Te’o memes, and geeking out over point spread bets.

Once upon a time not too long ago, a deaf film buff’s quest to find open captioning options at the movie theaters felt strikingly like an arduous quest across Middle-earth to reclaim a mountain from an evil, fiery dragon. If the script seems familiar, that’s because you’ve just seen the “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” via open captioning at a new local deaf-friendly business in Seattle: Ark Lodge Cinemas on Rainier Avenue.

Whether you're a Type-A personality or a serial couch potato, there's little doubt about what's been on your mind: New Year's resolutions. To make, or to not make? To resolve big, or to resolve little? You see, resolutions are like religion. Even if you don't overtly subscribe to it, the chiming of the midnight clock rattles through our champagne-induced joy, making all of us realize that it's time to (once again) try to be a better person.

What a year it’s been. As Mayan Apocalypse survivors, it’s only proper that we break out the bubblies and reflect on the last 365 days: Facebook went public for $24 a share, "Gangnam Style" reached +808M views, and the Mega Millions surpassed $640M. We debated about the seven Tour de France titles Lance Armstrong lost, watched from afar as Greece wrangled debt-restructuring deals, mourned Malala’s brave plight, as Syrian conflicts raged.
