I kept hearing about this Vet who could sign in fluent ASL - of course I had my doubts but my cat needed a check up. I decided to give it a try, it seemed like a better option than going to a random Vet nearby and not knowing what to expect. As soon as I arrived, I started to sign to the person at front desk (as I usually do at all places.) - she quickly picked up on it, knew my cat's and my name, and told me Dr. Reed would be with me in a moment. That was fast. Dr. Reed came out and started signing my name to call us in - and they were right, HE IS FLUENT! I had no problem explaining to him what things I've noticed my older cat started doing at home - (he reassured that they were normal, phew). I loved being able to explain about my cat's behavior in ASL and through facial expressions and gestures. He was able to tell me what those were and taught me a lot about cats. He knows his stuff!
I took my dog and two cats to 4 Paws Veterinary Center last month (1/2013) and the Deaf Vet Assistant was so wonderful, she helped me bring one of cat in crate while I took a dog and another cat in crate to room from my car. ASL communication used from beginning to end. Dr Reed, an ASL fluent DMV and was great at translating doctor terminology into simple English in ASL making my understanding on whats going on with my animals much easier. My dog has an aloof personality and always show fear once step her paw in any vet office but this one, she was wagging all the way, but of course she wasn't happy when needle poked inside her skin. After that visit completed, all pets were happy and so am I! Reasonable price. GREAT communication. Im going back there again soon to do follow up and would recommend others to go to have their pets checked up.
Know where to find a veterinarian that knows fluent ASL?? Dr. Kevin Reed is the guy. He is an impeccable veterinarian. Whenever I bring my cats in for their regular check up, it is guaranteed that I will have an easy conversation with him regarding my cats' health. He really knows his stuff with animals. It makes the whole vet visit much more relaxing for myself and the cats. Even better-- they have a veterinary assistant who is Deaf. She's brilliant and wonderful with the animals too. The front desk secretary and the owner of the veterinary clinic are also even knowledgeable with sign language!
When my cat got her teeth cleaned, Dr. Reed texted me to let me know that her procedure was over and that she was ready to be picked up. He also texted me the next day to see how my cat was feeling. Awesome communication access. This is a very unique veterinarian center. The vet fees may be bit high but so worth it! Your animals will definitely be well taken care of.
