If you socialize with deaf and/or hard of hearing people long enough, terms like "little d" and Big "D" will eventually come up during conversations. If you’re from the mainstream, you at first wonder if they're nerding out by arguing about the grammatical necessity of capitalization and lower-case writing.

Fellow Deafies, why do we love to date (or marry) thee? Let us count the ways: It’s the mutual “I’m lost” expression we exchange when the mustached waiter rambles too fast. It’s the passing-notes-in-class giddiness of using sign language in our private corner of the hearing world. It’s not dealing with awkward silences, because silence is our domain anyway. It’s not having to fall asleep with a squeak-squeak-squealing hearing aid when we can’t bear to skip lovers’ pillow talk.

It has its own Wikipedia entry. It has a custom sign (“DEAF” + “BELLY”). It literally gets on some peoples’ skin, in the form of tattoos and printed sweatshirts, and under the skin as our consciousness. “Deafhood” is everywhere. But on September 24, we – an audience of 200+ - got the inside scoop straight from the hands of the British guy who invented the term.
